Decorating small spaces

For 2 years I lived by myself in an apartment. Last summer for financial reasons I had to move back in with my parents. They didn't have a spare bedroom, but they did have a formal living room for me to use. The question was how to you take an entire 1 bedroom apartment worth of stuff into 1 room. Of course I packed all my kitchen belongings so the problem was my bedroom and living room. Here are some tips to decorate small spaces:

1. Designate areas- I have a sitting area on one end of the room with my piano and book cases.
This area is used for guests as well with a pull out couch and professional atmosphere.

2. Match color scheme throughout- in my apartment my living room was done in earthy Browns and greens while my bedroom was done in grey and lavender. I took my bedroom color scheme added black and white for a more well rounded color palette throughout. This way the transition is more seamless.

3. Unique arrangements- because this was a living room it has no closet and a fireplace (not working). I purchased a clothing rack and storage bins to create a closet. And I placed my desk in front of the fireplace which gives it a nice decorative look with the mantle above it.
Lastly you need the right artwork to pull it all together. I used my own artwork in this case but anything that goes with thecolor scheme or even adds a pop of color will help.
The key is to use art and knick knacks to finish the room but not overfill it. The last thing you need is an over crowded space. It makes the room seem smaller plus no one wants to visit clutter.

That's all for now. Next week I will be writing about a new way to decorate your greenhouse including and herb garden tea party.
